June 8: Great day to Pwllheli

Quite a pleasant greyish morning but the weather became perfect by noon.

Penhelig

A really worthwhile scenic journey all the way to PWL and back, much of it beside water and rolling hills in the distance. I had a nice window/facing/table seat too.

Even the recorded train announcement faltered on this name.

My stay: under 10 minutes

The train was late arriving at PWL so I didn't have time to disembark, I merely swapped seats to the other side of the table to what would be a window/facing/table seat.

Portmadog: Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways line

At Portmadog a large group of very jolly and very loud Welsh-speakers filled the carriage, three of them at my table. Some had pint glasses of something pink, I never discovered what it was, maybe lager and blackcurrent. They would all be talking together in Welsh then suddenly address me in English so I had to keep on my toes. One of them had recently been working in SE London, just a few miles from me.

They were all going to Barmouth and when they left the train they wished me a happy holiday and took every scrap of their rubbish - bottles, bags, etc. - with them. I did admire them for that.

Later the train was held for over 40 minutes at Dovey Junction because of a signalling power failure at SHR, but that didn't worry me too much as that was my final stop for the day.
