June 10: Another cancellation

Shrewsbury Hotel. My room 1st floor far left

This day was to take in what every list of scenic routes places near the top of the list for England: the Settle to CAR line and I could get to it via another, somewhat shorter, scenic route from Bamford to Grindleford alongside the River Derwent between SPT and SHF.

From SHF to LDS then the Settle line - but my 13:18 train was cancelled. The Information Desk advised that the best way to CAR would be via Newcastle. The next on the Settle line was in 2 hours making my arrival in BIF rather late. So I asked for a route to LAN so I could get a BIF train from there. This would be the 14:18 and the best plan for BIF would be to change at Carnforth. So this is what I did.

Clapham (Yorks)

Carnforth station
Carnforth station is where that famous scene in Brief Encounter was shot. Part of that platform is fenced off and includes a cafe and information centre. Signs all around the station don't let you forget it.

I easily caught my connection to BIF where checked in to the Wetherspoons hotel. It is currently my favourite Wetherspoons, better than Doncaster because the rooms are huge and it has no fewer than three lifts.

Northern trains have offered me a half-day refund of my Rail Rover ticket. (5/7/24)
